Dead Rabbits (Fiction)
The Dead Rabbits were made up primarily of young men and women. According to local legend, one of their most feared members was Hell-Cat Maggie, a woman said to have filed her teeth into sharp points and worn brass fingernails in battle, becoming one of the most iconic figures in New York's underworld.
The Forty Thieves (Essays)
Originally a loose group of petty criminals, the Forty Thieves soon evolved into one of the city's earliest organized street gangs, complete with its own rules and hierarchy. Members were expected to steal a daily quota of goods or face expulsion from the gang.
The Bowery Boys (Chronicles)
Unlike many of their criminal rivals, most Bowery Boys held legitimate jobs as printers, mechanics, and skilled apprentices, and dressed with notable style. But outside working hours, they roamed the saloons and alleys of the Bowery, engaging in fierce territorial battles with rival gangs.
Why Five Points?
Our name comes from Five Points, one of the most iconic, densely populated, and marginalized neighborhoods of nineteenth-century Lower Manhattan. Located where New York's Civic Center stands today, Five Points was home to newly emancipated African Americans and immigrants from across the world.
From this extraordinary convergence of cultures emerged a community shaped by resilience, entrepreneurship, commerce, racial integration, and cultural exchange—values that would eventually become part of New York City's identity. It is this spirit that continues to inspire Five Points Publishing today.
